Education: Where Do Chiropractors Study?
Chiropractors do not need to go to medical school. They are not medical doctors after all. They practice a form of alternative treatment. However, they do need to earn a DC or Doctor of Chiropractic degree. This is why chiropractors are often called doctors of chiropractic.
Chiropractors are not required to have a bachelor’s degree before entering chiropractic school—but many of them have it anyway. However, a minimum of 90 semester hours of undergraduate coursework is required before someone can enter a chiropractic program.
To obtain a chiropractic degree, chiropractors typically spend a total of four years studying. Programs may vary in length, but the course typically spends two years in the classroom and two years in the laboratory for clinical training.
The classroom coursework focuses on the sciences, including anatomy, physiology, biology, biochemistry, and pathology.
There are 16 accredited chiropractic programs nationwide.
Licensure: Do Chiropractors Need a License?
A license is required in all states. And so even if a chiropractor has a degree, they cannot legally perform spinal adjustments without a license.
It is obtained by passing a four-part test by the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners. And just like most health careers, continuing medical education or CME is required to keep licensure current.
While most state boards recognize the national test, others will require additional testing.
Even with a license, chiropractors may only practice spinal manipulation in the state where they obtained it.
Training and Application: What Do Chiropractors Do?
Training is continuous, as chiropractors deliver millions of successful adjustments every year. They provide pain relief and help treat different musculoskeletal conditions by using natural healing methods like spinal manipulation.
Chiropractic care is based on the philosophy that spinal joint misalignments can interfere with the nervous system and result in lower resistance to disease. Chiropractors also understand that the body has an amazing way of healing itself, and misalignments can lead to diminished health. Therefore, they use spinal adjustments to set everything back on track and ensure optimal healing.
Chiropractors analyze information in order to diagnose a patient’s condition and create an appropriate treatment plan.
It is ideal for a chiropractor to enjoy working with people and have strong communication skills because this will help diagnose the patient’s condition. It also helps build a continuous relationship where both are comfortable with one another.
