Chiropractors deliver millions of safe spinal adjustments every year. Each of these adjustments helps patients live more comfortably without pain. It is a great alternative to painkillers because of its natural approach. It does not have side effects, unlike medications that can sometimes cause harm to the body.

The Council on Chiropractic Guidelines and Practice Parameters

But if it’s so great, why do chiropractors still recommend patients to try other treatment methods? There is actually a good reason for this. The Council on Chiropractic Guidelines and Practice Parameters (CCGPP) recently polled a panel of leading chiropractors, and they reached an 80 percent consensus on some statements regarding chiropractic manipulation.

With this poll, it was confirmed that the top chiropractors agree patients would benefit greatly from seeing experts from other medical fields. So why does chiropractic care work best when integrated with other treatment methods? Is it not enough?

The answer is quite simple. Chiropractors specialize in the musculoskeletal system. They can treat the spine, fix subluxations, and deal with other problems within the body that might be causing discomfort. But while this approach is holistic in nature, other medical specialists can still bring something to the table.

The top chiropractors agree that not only should chiropractic care continue to define its emerging standards, it should also continue to cooperate with various health professions that treat low back pain when appropriate.

For this reason, many chiropractors refer patients to other practitioners or work in tandem with other professionals when treating lower back pain. This allows patients to enjoy a much more comprehensive treatment of back pain.

Proper integration can be achieved through a referral network that chiropractors can build itself. They can also work together in a multi-disciplinary or multi-specialty spine clinic. With that said, many chiropractors still prefer to work solo or with another chiropractor. So if you want to take a multi-disciplinary approach, talk to your chiropractor about it.

Chiropractic Care: Improving Patient Functionality

Chiropractors also agree that the ultimate goal of chiropractic care is to improve patient functionality and provide them with the education to improve their back pain on their own. In other words, chiropractors hope to reduce the frequency of treatments to a point where patients can independently achieve therapeutic relief of their back pain. This can be done by individual strengthening, range of motion, and rehabilitation exercises.

Chiropractors also reached a consensus regarding the importance of re-examining patients after the initial therapeutic trials in order to gauge the effectiveness of chiropractic treatments. This helps determine the next step in chiropractic care—including whether or not the patient needs to seek medical assistance from a different specialist.

Chiropractors need to compare, contrast and determine the effectiveness of chiropractic treatment using accepted measurements like pain scales, pain diagrams, daily living measures, decreases in work restrictions, improvements in lifting capacity, etc.

Chiropractors should also refer patients to other practitioners or emergency care when the following takes place:
There is no response to chiropractic treatment, and all other alternative chiropractic avenues have been used.

The patient’s lower back pain has worsened with treatment.
The patient has a serious or progressively worsening infection.
There are increasing neurologic deficits (cauda equina syndrome).
The patient experiences a medical emergency.
